Fleet Foxes + Blitzen Trapper at Schubas [04-06-08]

Monday, April 7, 2008

Oh, Fleet Foxes, how I love you dearly. I saw them last night at Schubas (per usual) with openers Blueblood and headliner Blitzen Trapper. Oh lovely lovelies. Fleet Foxes were just as good as I had hoped. I'm so glad to have seen them live - one of the best live performances soundwise I've seen this year. I got a couple videos on my digital camera, of course of "Oliver James" because I'm a little obsessed with it, and also "Wild Mountain Nation" by Blitzen Trapper.

Blitzen Trapper were also good - a fun live act. I particularly enjoyed the mangled cymbal bashing in the last pre-encore song (which Fleet Foxes joined with some percussion instruments).

I talked to Casey Wescott of Fleet Foxes (vocals, piano, mandolin) after the show for a couple minutes. We talked about the new self-titled LP that comes out in June (it leaked months ago). The album artwork (pictured above) is a 16th century Dutch painting by Pieter Bruegel called "Netherlandish Proverbs." See a bigger version here. The band was concerned they wouldn't be able to use it, but they did end up getting the rights. Casey also talked about the first track of the album "Red Squirrel / Sun it Rises," and how they aren't sure how they feel about using it on the finished album, but he felt like it gives a more "familiar" and welcoming aspect to the album. But ya, I'm in love.

Agreed, Fleet Foxes is by far my favorite live act of this year. I saw them a couple weeks ago. Great recordings, btw. Out of the ones that I've seen on youtube, yours capture their sound the most realistically...well, as you can get with a recording.

:) Thanks! I can't wait to see them again at Pitchfork.
